A lifelong resident of Prosser, Angela Mellor began her career in wine at the age of 21, and has managed the tasting room at Snoqualmie since the winery opened in 2003.
“When I first began working in wine I was very interested but not very knowledgeable,” she recalls. “Once I started at Snoqualmie and began to really learn about wines and the winemaking process, I came to appreciate it so much. After that it did not take me long to realize that I work for the best winery in the business!”
For Mellor, there is no “typical day” at Snoqualmie, and that’s how she likes it. “I love that each day is different, and that we have the pleasure of hosting guests from all over the world in our tasting room,” she says. “Whether it’s someone quickly passing through to grab a bottle of wine for a special dinner, or a group visiting the area for the first time, we always have fun talking to them and showing off the great wines that Joy and the team make here.”
Mellor, who also plans the winery’s special events and tastings, credits the winery team with helping to create a fun and educational atmosphere at Snoqualmie. “I have a great staff here and we are always learning – with wine, you can never know too much or enough,” she says. “It’s so rewarding to be able to teach our visitors about our wines and our sustainable and organics programs - often, this job does not seem like work at all!”
Mellor’s own tastes in wine have evolved over the years, from lighter fruit-forward wines to more complex reds and unusual varietals. “I love Joy’s Cabernet Sauvignon, and I have really enjoyed some of the winery exclusive wines we’ve had at Snoqualmie, including the Sangiovese and Barbera,” she says. “I always tell people that the most important thing is to drink what you like, whether you are relaxing with a glass of wine or pairing it with a wonderful dinner.”
When she’s not in the tasting room at Snoqualmie, Mellor enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters, traveling, cooking, baking, and crafting.
